The $1.5M Squeeze: Why we need a "Linguistic Sanctuary"

Chào Quý Vị / Hello everyone,

In our last update, we spoke about the 0% success rate for government-funded, Vietnamese-specific senior care beds in Vancouver. Today, we want to talk about the "Housing Trap"—the invisible wall that is squeezing three generations of our families at once.

The KCC "Room Shortage"

In the Kensington-Cedar Cottage (KCC) neighbourhood, our youth population is declining. With median house prices surpassing $1.5 million, working-class families are being squeezed. Many of us want to honour the tradition of caring for our parents at home, but without spare rooms, families are forced to choose between staying to care for elders or moving away to start their own lives.

Our Goal: By building 100 beds of clustered co-housing at 2400 Kingsway, we can free up rooms in potentially 100 family homes. Providing a professional, culturally familiar space for our elders gives the next generation peace of mind and the ability to stay and grow in their own neighbourhood.

We are Hitting the Streets!

The Outreach Phase has officially begun. Over the next few weeks, look for our flyers at Vietnamese business clusters along Kingsway and Victoria Drive. Some of the local partners we’ve visited:

  • Kingsway: Lotus Medical, Kim Chau, Kingsway Deli, Hung Le Income Tax

  • Victoria: 88 Supermarket, Bank Mi Saigon, Hoi An Restaurant, Steven Le Notary

Within a 2km radius of the Kingsway corridor, approximately 1,000 Vietnamese seniors live in linguistic isolation. Medical data shows that when a senior cannot communicate in their native tongue, the risk of depression and cognitive decline spikes.

A "Linguistic Sanctuary" at 2400 Kingsway isn't just about housing—it is a preventative healthcare strategy. We recently met an 80-year-old lady at the Britannia 55+ Centre who transits all the way from Surrey just to find a "culturally safe" environment where she can be understood.

How You Can Help This Month

We have a critical target of 100+ completed surveys to prove this demand to BC Housing.

  1. Sign the Community Statement: Take 2 minutes to watch our new video and sign our formal mandate. Share this with your parents so they can see their voices represented.

  2. Complete a Survey: If you haven’t yet, please fill out the survey on behalf of an elder you care for. We cannot solve a problem that we haven't quantified.

  3. Join the Conversation: Follow our progress and share stories on our Facebook Group

Thank you for helping us protect the legacy of our elders.

Trân trọng,

Tuan Pham
